I heard about it too. It has been on my radar for ages. It is having a lot of trouble because their labels are giving them issues about licensing their music and say that the talks are still in the works http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7213112.stm.
If you want ad-supported music, check out spiralfrog.com (filled to the gills with DRM but its better than nothing).

I think that this should be moved to Gnutella because that is what Qtrax is based on if I recall correctly.

As of right now It can't be classified under any P2P catagoury simply due to the fact that Downloads are currently disabled due to not haveing the backing of the Big 4 Labels.

Ok now for my opinion. First off since they didn't have the backing of the Big 4 Labels like they said they did what they should have done was delayed the launch and say that it was due to some major bugs in the system that could cause the end users computer to become unstable and then release it after they have some backing, if they even get any. Tell a lie to cover a lie that's how business works, especially when they have been hyping it like they have. Second of all the basis of QTrax is all wrong. They have used a software base that is currently in beta at version 0.4 as the basis of their service. This could create complications when bugs arise with is the bug in Song Bird or is it in the QTrax service. Also, they say QTrax is currently out. That is a bunch of bull. All they have done is released the current version of SongBird with the extension for QTrax preinstalled. The only thing you can do with the extension is browse their so called catalog since the downloads are disabled. Are we supposed to be testing QTrax or SongBird seeing as how the only features you can use are the original ones in SongBird?

Thanks BlueIce,

I didn't really look into what this app is/does. So, thanks for pointing out all of the things you posted.

I will look into it myself when I have a chance and see if some sort of a disclaimer might need to be added to this thread.

Doesn't sound too promising from what you have said.

In any event, I'll post more when I know more about it.

Yes, you are right about this app being based on the Gnutella Network.

If this ever becomes a "viable" app, I will move it to that Forum.

But, like BlueIce has pointed out, it doesn't do anything, atm.

For those interested in more info, please look at what Wikipedia has to say:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QTrax
QTrax

The Wiki page is a "work in progress", so you might want to check it often if you are contemplating using QTrax.

And, if you are seriously considering using this app, please read the Legal Disclaimer at QTrax:

http://www.qtrax.com/legal.html

As with all Legal Disclaimers, please take the time to read it in it's entirety (before you install it). There are some really interesting statements in there, like this one:

That statement, coupled w/the fact that one has to agree to this:

We also use your contact details to inform you of any updates to Qtrax, and for the purpose of targeting advertising on behalf of our advertisers. You agree to accept receipt of banner and pop-up advertising only when using the Qtrax application in return for using our free Qtrax file sharing software.
makes this app just seem to fly in the face of what we are all about here at PL, and that is, SECURITY for your computer.

I have only quoted two parts of this disclaimer; there's many more "interesting" things in it, so take the time to read it fully before you use QTrax.

So, my final word to anyone that is using/considering using QTrax, You Do So At Your Own Risk!!

More than a year after its expected launch, free P2P music service Qtrax has finally gotten off the ground with deals with all the major music labels. Universal, EMI, Sony, and now Warner Music Group are now all on board with the ad-supported service, and things can finally get rolling... once the software becomes available, that is.

Qtrax was originally slated to launch in January 2008, when it overconfidently boasted of having deals with the Big Four labels. It turns out that none of those deals had been signed yet, reportedly annoying the record labels and pushing the launch date back indefinitely. In February, Qtrax CEO Allan Klepfisz insisted that the music was still coming, but the first music deal didn't land until June. Qtrax spent the remainder of the year trying to hammer things out with the remaining labels, bringing us to where we are today.

Qtrax works by offering free, legal music downloads via the Gnutella P2P network. The music is supported by advertising on the site, though don't go thinking that it's DRM-free or that your usage won't be watched. Qtrax music employs Windows Media DRM that will not only prevent copying to your friends' computers, it will also track how many times a song is played and by which artists. Presumably, this is to figure out what kind of music you like the most and target the site's advertising better, though the company also says that the artists and labels that are played the most will get the largest payments out of the pool of ad revenue.

The problem with that, as we found out last year, is that P2P users are unlikely to go for DRM-laden music files when they could just as easily get DRM-free music from the very same network. The other obvious limitation with using Windows Media DRM is that the music will obviously not work with the largest group of portable music players in the world—the iPod, of course—though it will work with a handful of others.

Still, the company seems eager to get things going after such a long and embarrassing delay. "We had a somewhat embarrassing launch," Qtrax CEO Allan Klepfisz told the Associated Press (via PaidContent). "Now, we clearly do want to make a lot of noise."

Qtrax says that some 300,000 users have been participating in the beta of the service, though Qtrax's beta software was recently pulled in anticipation of its (still-impending) 1.0 launch. There's a note on the site saying that beta users should continue downloading music, but there is currently no way for new users to join in on the fun. In the meantime, potential customers are left checking out the available selections on Qtrax's site or following links to Amazon's MP3 store where they can buy the DRM-free versions.
