I went to Control Panel\Sounds and Audio Devices and opened the "Sounds" tab and changed the sound for Windows\Default Beep to "none". Even after saving this as a scheme and rebooting, the high-pitched beep remained when moving the volume control slider up and down.

The only thing that you (Mungo) can do (as I see it) about this beep you can't tolerate is to highlight "default beep" under Windows and then using the browse button at the bottom, find a .wav file on your HD that is not as irritating to you and change it to that one. Just curious, what .wav file is shown when you highlight "Default Beep" on the "Sounds" tab???

Or, maybe you will be lucky and it will clear that sound for you when you select "none" for Windows\Default Beep. I was unsuccessful in doing that.

That beep isn't in any file...it's a default one tone system beep built in the OS. Its funny you're having these issues too mine worked np. What soundcards are you using.

I got it to work! I have successfully eliminated the most annoying sound on earth.

Outline for those unfamiliar with comps:

Steps:
-If you have XP, then you have a program to record sounds.
-With the mic unplugged (or absent), record a 1 sec clip. It doesn't matter really how long, but it probably saves resources if its not a 10 min long clip.
-Save to c:/windows/media
-Change the sound for Default Beep in Sounds (Control Panel) to the file just recorded above. Apply and save.
-Viola! No more goddamn beeps in the volume manager.*

*except for a soft, padded sound that can only be heard at max volume
