Talking PeerBlock Rev52 Installer For WinXP/Vista/7 (x64-x86)

PeerBlock r52 Installer

OK here it is. This setup has been modified to no longer install on windows 9x.

There are 4 versions of windows this will work on Win2K WinXP/64 WinVista/64 and Win7/64.

The driver is still not signed but the bugs dealing with the need for pgloader have been fixed as of this release. Use the various ways to disable Vista's and Win7's Driver signing and enjoy this release.

*Edit the installer has been edited to work alongside with the install of PG2.
*Edit This Currently supports all NT Versions of Windows from Win2K - Win7 on Both x64 and x86 variants.

Default Re: PeerBlock Rev52 Installer

Thanks m8!! I have been using pg2 for years now, and have been disappointed by the development of it since Vista. (Im not complaining - especially because im poor and cant donate!) I registered here just to post for this. I am wondering if i am doing something wrong. When i install peerblock (with this installer) it seems to go fine, until the 1st run. It will run the 'setup' fine also (asking when to update, etc). Then when i try to run it, it says 'needs admin priv.', so i right click icon, but it is pointing to C:\Program Files\Peerblock\pg2.exe . When i repoint it to 'C:\Program Files\Peerblock\peerblock.exe' it lets me run, but crashes when loaded. (i can see splash screen, and update box once, but it crashes with no errors or anything).

So i tried to reinstall it, now when i try to run i get an error- until i point the shortcut to the correct .exe (peerblock not pg2). It seems to update when enabled now ( )!! I will restart with it enabled and post back if that is still not working. (But according to your post-its fixed now)

Except for the install issues- Thank You So Much (and Mark)!!! We have been waiting for years for a 100% working pg2 and looks like we may finally have it!!

Usually i just disable pg2 before updating or Exiting, and have never needed the loader, but i am looking foward to it starting with windows and letting me forget all about it again! :D

(I hope this post isnt confusing)

Exclamation Re: PeerBlock Rev52 Installer

Please note that r52 was originally supposed to be released for INTERNAL TESTING PURPOSES ONLY - I wanted to have a couple more days of stabilization/bug-fixing before releasing it to the "public" here. So if the release ends up having a couple of annoying bugs in it still, that's why.

That said, since DisCoStu has already let the cat out of the bag, here's the official description of this release at the PeerBlock Dev Blog. Short version:
  • NO MORE LOADER REQUIRED!! - Looks like I've fixed all the problems that used to require us to use pg2loader.exe (or RobrPatty's .bat file) to get PG2 to load. That isn't necessary anymore! PeerBlock can now start up simply by double-clicking on it, and you don't hafta be careful about updating lists while it's enabled or anything.
  • Uses peerblock.conf - If you're used to hand-editing the pg2.conf file to adjust your settings, you'll need to update peerblock.conf. I believe this installer should be pulling in the pg2.conf from your pre-existing installation to use as a base config prior to saving its own peerblock.conf - at least that's what DisCoStu and I had talked about when I asked him to work on the installer.
  • Creates Mini-dumps - If the program hits an unhandled exception, it should create a peerblock.dmp file. If you encounter any problems please make sure to email me both your peerblock.log and peerblock.dmp files from the run that crashed!! (peerblock.log will be overwritten when you next start the tool, so don't start it up again until you save a copy aside)
  • Different .exe and .sys Names - The program now uses peerblock.exe and pbfilter.sys, so can actually be "installed" into the same directory as PG2. And since it uses its own .conf file - starting off using the pg2.conf file as an initial default if peerblock.conf isn't found - it shouldn't adversely impact your old PG2 install at all.
  • Different Warning for Signed Driver Problems - Since so many people have been posting messages to this forum about the "StartService 577" error, PeerBlock is specifically trapping that error and displaying a message that I hope more understandably tells you that you need to do something about your driver-signing.
You do still need to run the tool in Administrator Mode. And you do still need to do something to disable Windows's pesky signed-driver checking. I was originally hoping to have a "Donate!" button up on the PeerBlock Website by this point to help move this along, but haven't had a chance to do so yet; getting a real signed driver costs a fair amount of money, so we're all going to need to pitch in if we don't want to hafta deal with this driver-signing problem anymore!

Anyhow, enjoy the release, it should be working pretty well for you now. And again, please post any feedback either here or to me via email! (Comments on the Installer itself should go either here or to DisCoStu via PM)

Edit: Oh, and many thanks to DisCoStu for his work on the installer! =;)

Wow, Mark, we post at the same time! Love it - it seems to be working great (havent tested much though). Even a poor person like me will donate for a signed driver (and working app) - im am excited that you will even go through the trouble of getting the driver signed. You impress me even more daily. I have been watching your progress and was running r33 and quite happy about it. Thanks millions!!

(Thanks for letting me know this release still has bugs - or i might be posting rhetoric here - FYI (im sure you know) peerblock crashes after restart but seems to run fine after intial two crashes. Still much better IMHO! Thanks!)

P.s. - Running Win7 7100 here - and it doesnt start with windows, but loader is Not needed!!
Also - do you think you could change the default lists to the iblocklist lists? (fahkirs) of course, im not sure if the default lists are the same or not - thanks!

Okay, I think I've successfully setup the sourceforge.net donation thing.

Click here to donate to the signed-driver fund!!

It looks like it's going to take $230 or so to get a code-signing certificate that will let us officially sign a driver, and make changes to that driver (and resign it) for a year afterwards. While that sounds like a fair chunk of change, if we all pool our efforts I think we should be able to get there pretty quickly. If we can get just 25 people to contribute $10 apiece - what's that, less than the cost of a pizza nowadays? - then BOOM we'd be there (depending on additional taxes/VAT).

So, if you want a signed driver, then please hit the link and share a few bucks!

Thanks in advance,

--- Mark ---

Hmm, didn't realize a sourceforge.net account was required - probably 'cause I was already signed-in when I went to submit the first donation. I've posted a direct-to-paypal donation link on the PeerBlock Dev Blog, if you want to be able to donate without having to create an account at sourceforge.net. Hopefully that one will be less of a hassle . . . let me know!

Thanks,

--- Mark ---
